Haiti Earthquake Rehabilitation 2010
Initiation: Mar 01, 2011
Partners: EMPACT Northwest
Context: After the Earthquake though Haiti’s devastated healthcare network had for the most part resumed functioning, the country remained strapped for resources, more pressing was the shortage of doctors and skilled medical professionals.
Activities: In an attempt to address this, SHINE Humanity collaborated with EMPACT Northwest, a Seattle-based disaster response agency, to support the completion of Haiti House. This was a doctor’s hostel which served as a base to recruit and assist international volunteers. In addition to making the hostel a comfortable place to live and base missions out off, SHINE Humanity also actively recruited medical volunteers to visit Haiti and serve at one of the three centers EMPACT Northwest had established relationships with, including the MediShare Hospital in Port au-Prince, a primary care clinic and an orphanage.
Accomplishments: The Hostel offered a “full-service volunteer package” where prospective volunteers to Haiti were assured of transportation, accommodation, security, translation services and provided linkages to a safe place to work.
